Abstechen
In der Serienfertigung, insbesondere bei Einsatz von Stangenvorschubmaschinen, ist das Abstechen eine häufige Bearbeitungsmethode. Obwohl das Abstechen selbst nur einen geringen Teil der Gesamtbearbeitungszeit eines Werkstücks ausmacht und daher nicht maßgeblich zur Zeiteinsparung beiträgt, ist es dennoch ein wesentlicher Prozess. Nach dem Abstechen werden oft in der Gegenspindel weitere Merkmale an den meisten Werkstücken hinzugefügt. Ein Problem hierbei kann das Entstehen von Wickelspänen sein, die das Einspannen des nächsten Werkstücks in der Gegenspindel behindern können, was zu Ausschuss oder Maschinenstillständen führen kann. Zudem können sich Späne um das fertiggestellte Werkstück wickeln, was nachfolgende Prozesse wie Wärmebehandlung, Entgraten oder Montage erschwert. Da das Abstechen oft der letzte Schritt in der Bearbeitung eines Werkstücks ist, spielt die Sicherheit bei diesem Prozess eine wichtige Rolle. Ein Werkzeugbruch während des Abstechens kann das Werkstück beschädigen und zu längeren Ausfallzeiten der Maschine führen.
Einstechen
Bei Einstechoperationen liegt der Fokus vorrangig auf hoher Produktivität. Diese Art der Anwendung gilt im Vergleich zu Abstechprozessen als weniger komplex, wodurch eine hohe Prozesssicherheit einfacher zu erreichen ist. Dies erhöht die Anforderungen an die Produktivität, besonders bei der Fertigung breiter Nuten. Breitere Nuten benötigen mehr Zeit und beeinflussen daher die Gesamtbearbeitungszeit des Werkstücks stärker als schmalere Nuten.
