Digital caliper - Multifunctional tool for professional measurements
A vernier caliper, often referred to as a calliper, is one of the most precise measuring tools that are available in a wide variety of designs, sizes and reading functions. They range from massive workshop callipers to handy pocket callipers. Both the digital caliper and the variants with nonius and round scale have a high level of accuracy. With digital calipers, however, reading the measured values is much easier because the result is displayed directly on an LCD display.
These measuring tools are primarily used for manually measuring the length and distance of objects. They can be used to measure the diameter of threads and similar workpieces to within a fraction of a millimeter. There are special depth gauges for depth measurements, i.e. precise measurements in depth. Vertical and horizontal measurements are usually taken with built-in calipers. These offer measuring ranges of up to 100 cm.
Inside and outside measurements
With the larger legs of the vernier caliper, external surfaces can be measured precisely, for example the external dimensions of a pipe, a line or the distances between gears. The smaller legs on the opposite side are used to measure inside diameters. Digital calipers can usually achieve a measurement accuracy of up to 0.01 mm. The possibility of reading graduation marks on the movable length scale also increases the measuring accuracy of analog calipers even further.
Comparison: analog and digital caliper
Analog and digital calipers both have their merits and will vary in suitability depending on the application and personal preference. Here is an overview of the main differences:
Analog caliper
Analog calipers, also called vernier calipers, use a scale and a sliding vernier to take measurements. They require some reading practice, as the measurement is determined by matching tick marks on the major and vernier scales. A big advantage of analogue calipers is that they do not need a battery and are therefore always ready for use. They are often made of hardened stainless steel and are therefore robust and durable.
Digital caliper
Digital calipers, on the other hand, have an LCD display on which the measured values can be read directly and without interpretation. This makes handling easier and increases the speed of the measurement. Digital calipers often also allow you to switch between different units of measurement (e.g. centimeters and inches) at the touch of a button. Data transfer of the measured values to a computer is possible with many digital models, which facilitates further processing and documentation.
However, digital calipers require a battery to operate, which can become a disadvantage if used or not used for a long time. However, some models have small solar cells that power the display. Another benefit of digital calipers is the ability to zero calibrate the reading at any position. This means that the values can be started from zero for each new measurement process. A locking screw is used to fix a specific measuring range. This keeps the value for further measurements.
Material and processing of digital calipers
When processing the calipers, great importance is attached to high quality in order to ensure optimal measuring accuracy. The precise interaction of the various components ensures an exact measurement result and a long service life of the device. Nevertheless, there are differences in terms of the material, which in turn offer corresponding advantages.
Hardened stainless steel digital calipers
Digital calipers are usually made of hardened stainless steel, which makes them particularly resistant and durable. These precise measuring instruments ensure high measuring accuracy and are available in different versions. The use of hardened stainless steel as a material ensures that digital calipers retain their high level of accuracy and function properly even after prolonged use. In addition, they are usually dustproof and therefore ideally suited for use in workshops or on construction sites.
Digital calipers with plastic
Some models of digital calipers are equipped with measuring jaws made of plastic, which are a little less resilient than those made of stainless steel, but are ideal for mobile use due to their lightness. The plastic measuring jaws are nevertheless robust enough to withstand the daily demands and ensure precise measurement.
