What is corner milling and what factors should be considered? These aspects contribute to a successful process.
Corner milling represents an essential method of milling in which a tool simultaneously creates a face and a shoulder surface. In everyday language, this process is often referred to as shoulder milling. Typically, shoulder milling cutters have a cutting edge angle of 90°. This precise angle is critical to prevent steps between the individual milling tracks. Both indexable insert and solid carbide tools are suitable for corner milling. Each of these tools brings specific advantages.
The performance of the machine, the geometry of the part, and the surface finish requirements are just some of the determining factors in choosing the appropriate tool. Indexable insert milling cutters (WSP cutters) score with their cost advantage thanks to reusable milling bodies, which minimizes follow-up costs. However, if the requirements for precision and the quality of the component surface increase, solid carbide cutters are the preferred option.
What are corner milling cutters
Corner milling cutters are mainly used in shoulder and slot machining. Various types can be used here, such as circumferential milling, pocket milling or 3D contour milling. Which type is used depends largely on the type of insert.
In the corner milling process, two surfaces are created simultaneously. This metal-cutting process is made up of a combination of circumferential and face milling. One of the key requirements here is the generation of a shoulder with an exact 90° angle. Corner milling can be performed with conventional corner cutters as well as end mills, shell end mills and side milling cutters. Due to the variety of options, it is important to consider the specific application requirements in order to make the best selection and achieve the desired result.
