Twist Drill — HSS-G, 3.5 mm, 118° point, Hexagonal Shank, Fully Ground, Silver, DIN 338 (MetavCUT) The Twist Drill delivers precise metal drilling for portable and stationary Drilling Machines with a 3.5 mm diameter and a 118° point angle, designed for demanding machining tasks. Fully Ground geometry for precise holes Hexagonal Shank for secure bit holders Optimised for metal: HSS-G material Conforms to DIN 338 for short twist drills Compatible with Hand and portable Drilling Machines Durable HSS-G Material for Reliable Metalworking This twist drill uses HSS-G (high-speed steel, ground), a material chosen for strength and cutting performance when machining metals. The ground flute geometry produces very sharp cutting edges and high concentricity, which helps achieve clean, precise holes in alloyed and unalloyed steel, cast materials and non-ferrous metals. Because the cutting edges are produced by CNC grinding rather than rolling, the tool cuts more efficiently, reducing the required feed force and improving surface finish for subsequent operations. Efficient Cutting Geometry that Saves Effort Engineered with a 118° point angle and fully ground flutes, the bit centres easily and penetrates softer metals and mixed materials with controlled chip evacuation. The specific grind reduces friction and can enable up to faster drilling rates compared with roll-formed equivalents while requiring less axial force. For professionals working on production or maintenance tasks, this means more consistent hole quality and reduced operator strain during repetitive drilling. Fast, Secure Changeover with Hexagonal Shank A Hexagonal Shank design ensures form-fit torque transmission in quick-change holders and bit chucks commonly found on cordless drivers and workshop holders. This improves resistance to cam-out and simplifies tool changes without compromising compatibility with standard chucks. The fully ground finish and silver surface also aid visibility of wear, assisting timely tool inspection and maintenance. Optimised Dimensions and Machine Compatibility With a 3.5 mm diameter, Flute Length 39 mm and Total Length 90 mm, this twist drill is dimensioned for through-holes and moderate-depth bores in metalworking tasks. Conformity to DIN 338 classifies this as a short twist drill suitable for both stationary machine tools and portable use, depending on application and coolant provision. For best results, use appropriate speeds, feeds and cooling when drilling hard materials to extend tool life. Use of coolant further reduces heat build‑up and preserves the coating, enabling consistent performance on alloyed and unalloyed steel. Simple Terms: What HSS‑G, TIN and Fully Ground Mean The designation HSS‑G indicates a ground high‑speed steel bit — grinding creates very sharp cutting edges and high run‑out accuracy. A TIN‑coated (Titanium Nitrid) surface acts as a solid lubricant layer that lowers friction and wear. A fully ground shank and flute geometry reduce cutting forces by up to 50% compared with conventional HSS bits, which means faster penetration and less operator effort. The 118° tip angle offers a compromise between centring ability and cutting strength, suitable for many metal applications. Applications and Who Benefits Most This short Twist Drill is designed for professional metalworkers, toolrooms and advanced hobbyists who require reliable holes in materials such as Tempered Steel, Gusseisen, Sintereisen, Neusilber, Kupfer, Bronze and Hartkunststoff. Its robustness and reduced tendency to chatter make it a sound choice for tasks that demand repeatability rather than deep through‑holes. For larger diameters or deeper drilling, consider longer geometries or stepped approaches. Longer tool life thanks to TiN coating and ground geometry A TiN‑coated surface combined with HSS‑G (ground high‑speed steel) reduces friction at the cutting edge and helps dissipate heat, which extends service life during continuous metal drilling. The ground flute geometry produces sharper cutting edges and a more efficient chip removal path, allowing up to 40% faster penetration in many ferrous materials while requiring significantly less feed force compared with conventional HSS drills. Broad metal compatibility and machine use Designed as a Type N normal‑spiral drill to DIN 338, this short twist drill is intended primarily for metal: alloyed and unalloyed steel, cast and sintered iron, bronze, copper and hard plastics. Its 135° tip angle improves entry and centring in harder workpieces such as stainless steel and temper castings. The tool is suitable for use in both stationary drilling machines and suitable hand drilling setups, provided correct clamping and coolant are used. Practical advantages for workshop productivity The fully ground shank and precise CNC grinding process yield high concentricity, which reduces vibration and produces cleaner holes with better surface finish. Because the short variant minimises deflection, higher feed rates can be applied safely on appropriate machines. For everyday workshop tasks that demand repeatable quality and minimal rework, this tool offers a measurable improvement in process reliability. Twist Drill Bits: Design and Typical Use
The twist drill (also known as a helical drill) is defined by its spiral flutes, which help remove chips quickly and can also support the flow of lubricants during drilling. Of course, we also carry suitable lubricants for your drilling tasks.
What a Twist Drill Bit Looks Like
A twist drill features a conical tip and multiple cutting edges—typically the main cutting edges, secondary edges, and a chisel edge. Common point angles include:
- 118° or 135° on HSS drill bits (high-speed steel)
- 142° on carbide drill bits
The point angle matters because it influences how well the bit handles lateral forces and impacts. Depending on the material, a larger or smaller angle can help reduce or increase the required feed pressure. A smaller angle can also improve self-centering and reduce the risk of slipping on smooth or curved surfaces.
Materials: Built for Long Service Life
To ensure durability and reliable performance, our twist drill bits are made from robust materials such as:
- HSS (high-speed steel)
- HSS-G (ground high-speed steel)
- HSSE (high-speed steel with 5% cobalt content)
Applications: From Metal to Material-Specific Drilling
Twist drill bits are commonly used for metalworking (often referred to as “metal drill bits”), but there are also optimized versions for wood, masonry, and plastics. The key is matching bit geometry, material, and shank/holder type to the job.

FAQ: Common Questions About Drill Bits
What are three common types of drill bits?
-
A simple, practical breakdown for most projects includes:
- Twist (metal) drill bits (e.g., HSS/HSS-G/HSSE)
- Wood drill bits (often with a centering/brad point for clean starts)
- Masonry/concrete drill bits (typically carbide-tipped; often SDS variants for rotary hammers)
Which drill bits are the best?
-
The “best” drill bits are the ones that match your material and your tool. As a rule of thumb:
- Steel & stainless steel: high-quality ground twist drill bits—often HSSE/cobalt for tougher materials
- Wood: wood bits with a centering point for precise, clean holes
- Masonry/concrete: carbide-tipped masonry or hammer drill bits; with rotary hammers, frequently SDS-plus
Also consider point geometry, consistent run-out, and using the right speed and feed—these details strongly influence hole quality and bit life.
What’s the difference between SDS drill bits and SDS Plus drill bits?
-
In everyday language, “SDS” is often used as a shorthand. SDS-plus is the most common shank system for many rotary hammers (typically for light to mid-duty applications). The main point is compatibility: the bit and the chuck must match. SDS-plus is not the same as SDS-max.
Can a rotary hammer drill in normal (non-hammer) mode?
-
Yes—many rotary hammers include a drill-only mode (no impact). In that setting, you can drill “normally,” for example in wood or metal. Depending on the machine, you may need a suitable chuck or adapter when using standard cylindrical-shank drill bits.
